I learned this mig welding technique over 20 years ago and have gotten a lot of mileage out of it. I use it for almost everything because it is simple and it works. What more could you ask for?

    @MRVENNYO my interprovicial welder program book and my modern welding text book and my old school welding teacher state otherwise, but Im not saying what is in your book isnt true. My books even show macro images of 20 degree push and pull

    @KurtisWM lol i …
    @KurtisWM lol i dunno mate, i think u have gas metal arc welding mixed up with flux core. Look it up, the only time you should drag a mig welder when welding steel, is when you r doing your first run on a full penetration butt weld(you dont have to), or if you are welding thin material. Just look it up, i just got out of my apprenticeship.

    Serriously though man, google it or something. I can give you the name of my GMAW procedure books if you like.

    does this work for auto sheet metal too?

    @MRVENNYO But when …
    @MRVENNYO But when you drag it, you cannot really have the puddle get ahead of the arch. and according to all my studies and practical cwb testing, acid etching drag is better. Even on a robot welding maching to rule out human error to have a perfectly consistant weld. But like you said, we could argue about this forever. Im just stating what I have learnt

    According to AWS, dragging your cup with your arc pointed opposite of travel direction gives greater penetration and less splatter…just a quick FYI….dont worry mate ive actually had to show the literature to foreman i have worked for ;)

    @KurtisWM nare well …
    @KurtisWM nare well im a qualified engineer fabricator. i know that if u drag it, its gona give you more build up and less penetration, hence the narrow weld beads. If you r pushing the arc, you have a hotter and bigger weld pool which offcourse is deeper penetration.

    lol anyways im sure we could argue about it, but yeah thats how i was taught in school in my apprenticeship when i was working at a slipway

    @jackthehatphoto …
    @jackthehatphoto they shouldn’t it’s not that hard to lay those beads i do welds like those all the time it’s all about being comfortable, muscle memory and hood time, combine those and welds like this mans will be easy to do.

    Nice series! I’m in a location where we can’t get any gas or I’d order up a machine to learn with. Is there a welder that will work with 50 and 60 hz as well as 110/220? I work in Iraq and want to send over a small machine (USPS mailing limits of 70 lbs) and flux core is the only thing I can think of to practice with. I’ll keep watching your vids aqnd see what I can pick up. Thanks for posting these.

    @MRVENNYO

    Actually dragging give slightly more penetration with GMAW. They tend to get slightly narrower weld beads as opposed to pushing

    you should allways be pushing the arc with mig, not dragging it unless your getting full penetration on a butt weld, or if your doing a vertical down.DRAGGING IS LESS PENETRATION.

    Hi, Thanks for your videos…
    I’m thinking about welding a steel or aluminum half hard top for my Jeep Wrangler TJ… Could you recommend a metal and its gauge? Should I weld a frame first or can I just weld the sheets of metal together?
    I’ve never welded before, however, I have soldered some. My brother has a welder and I’m hoping to use it. :)
